At SAP, I tackled diverse projects, wearing many hats. This case study highlights one standout project, detailing its challenges, insights, and impact. Stay till the end for a glimpse into my other experiences.
My Role: UX Designer
Team: 2 Developers, 2 QA, 1 Product Lead
Timeline: Dec 2024 - Present
Tools: Figma, SAP's Fiori iOS Design Kit, SAP's Web UI5 Kit
The Problem
Finding the right card in SAP's "Cheer" app was slow and frustrating - 3+ clicks and lots of scrolling.
The solution
A global and local search to find cards much faster.
Impact
Faster search: Reduced to 1-2 taps, saving 5-7 seconds per card.
Higher engagement: Boosts employee card-sending volume.
Improved discoverability: Cards now easily found via global and category search.
Boosts employee engagement and morale!
Action
What led to the solution?
Ideation and prototyping
A/B Testings
Collaboration with developers, QA, and product owners
CONTEXT
Why does this app matter?
Building a positive work culture matters.
"Cheer" makes it easy for employees to recognize and appreciate each other, boosting engagement and morale.
THE PROBLEM
Users guessed unintuitive categories to find specific cards.
Required at least 3 clicks to send, more if lost.
Forced endless scrolling through long category lists.
Led to user frustration, app abandonment, and undiscovered cards.
THE CHALLENGE
IDEATION
Researched and mapped search solutions through competitor analysis, journey mapping, and wireframing to design two feasible options.
Key insights
Competitor & pattern analysis identified best practices.
User journey mapping pinpointed friction points.
Wireframing visualized usability-feasibility balance.
A/B TESTING
I designed two search variations and walked the developer through both options. We discussed technical constraints, implementation effort, and user experience trade-offs.
FINAL DESIGN
I designed two search variations and walked the developer through both options. We discussed technical constraints, implementation effort, and user experience trade-offs.
Local search within categories enables fast filtering for known occasions. A real-time search bar filters cards as users type, staying inline without modals—returning matching cards and occasions instantly.
Impact
Search time reduced: From 3+ taps and lengthy scrolling to 1 tap and typing.
Higher engagement: More cards sent, strengthening workplace connections.
Better discoverability: Surfaced hidden cards, boosting their usage.
Improved user satisfaction: From endless scrolling frustration to seamless experience.
Reflections
SAP's welcoming design culture fostered invaluable connections with diverse teams. Collaborating exposed me to unique approaches, which I adapted to enhance my own work.
Close collaboration with developers, QA, and product owners deepened my understanding of the product lifecycle. My prior developer experience enriched this perspective as a designer.
Participating in the SAP Hackathon was inspiring; witnessing ideas come to life highlighted UX's powerful impact on innovation.
