Redesigned the Meetup App interface to enable users to find interested events in a lengthy list of options without feeling overwhelmed.

Design an accessible map on the Eclipse Soundscape website (desktop version) for participants to view eclipse information.

The challenge

Young adults who are eager to connect with others and explore their city would appreciate a streamlined approach to finding events without feeling overwhelmed to search through a lengthy list of options.

The result

Understanding the landscape

Meetup is a platform for organizing and discovering group events based on shared interests and local gatherings.

It allows users to create and join groups based on their interests and location, and then schedule events or meetups related to those interests. Members of a group can then communicate with each other, RSVP to events, and share photos and updates through the app.

Defining Research Objectives

To identify common problems faced by users using the app.
To identify the design solution(s) most relevant to users, event organizers, and the identified problem.
To understand how any design change might have an impact on the business of the event organizers on the app.

User Testing #1

Seven individuals used the app with its existing features and gave feedback

"I want to sort events based on the number of participants because I would want to go to events with a lot of participants."

"Overwhelming to find the event I want as the events list is so lengthy."

"Better sort or filter functionality can help make searching for events easier"

"Having a commonly asked questions section can be really helpful."

"It would be good to have photos if they are recurring events (otherwise wouldn’t want to trust)."

"Would like to see the rating of the place/event."

A journey map was created based on the users interactions and this flow was generated to understand some of the problem areas.

Feature Prioritization helped me focus on one feature issue for the scope of this project

Challenges discovered during ideation

Building a design solution that benefits users without creating any challenges for the event organizers.
Need to make sure that with the new design changes, all events should still be accessible (no blind spots).

Proposed Changes

After doing a study on the discovered problem areas from the user testing, and understanding the potential challenges to address while making adjustments, these are the proposed changes.

Design Phase

Meetup's UI Kit was used to redesign the application.

High-fidelity prototype

Figma was used to create High Fidelity prototypes of the Dark Mode version of the mobile app.

Picking from a range of number of people attending the event

The filter under 'All' events tab allows for users to look for events based on the filter of attendee count that they are comfortable with.

Users can now look for latest events by sorting on 'Event Date'

Quickly finding events that fall under your availability is made easier with an 'Event Date' sort feature.

Usability Testing

Another round of usability testing was conducted with the new features.

"The layout of the three buttons on the top instead of the old layout makes the navigation easier."

"The filter to sort attendee count based on a range would make it easier to find the events one is looking for."

"The ascending and descending order to date could be very helpful."

"The color contrast is not great in the dark mode."

Thoughts and Next Steps

Going forward, we would like to:

Conduct further usability testing, especially with screen readers.
Have a better integration of keyboard accessibility instructions.
Provide a multilingual option.
